RE: John Deriso
"And of course, beyond all this, I would like to know how conservationism is a bad thing. What rationale is there for consumerism?"
Conservationism can also be called an anti-global trade premise. Typical suggestions in conservationism, include the following
1) shopping locally - 'saving fuel costs and such'.. which means do not buy it from a cheaper place.
It also, keeps servicing the products within the local manufactures scope, and thereby keeps though local revenue streams open.
2) Spend less - well capital that is spent on products in turn increases employment - lesser products purchased less jobs, less jobs great poverty.
"What is the logic behind using up everything all at once, and anyone else, any other nation be damned? "
You are sort of vague when you say "using up everything all at once",well fungibility is the key here.
If you are referring to Oil for example, it is not used all at once. The US for example stock piles huge amounts of fuel. It's called resource planning.
As for the tar sands, 'oh well were using that all up', well theres some bad news. There are certain bacterias that think the oil in the tar sands are just yummy.
The reserve is depleting naturally.

What is the harm in some caution when it comes to our environment?
My retort to this comment, how long does an environmental assessment take in Canada? It seems pretty slow to me.
"Computers don't need that much memory! And so on.....)"
And finally, the above statement was never said, nor was there any similar statement that can be attributed to Bill Gates. Though it is another meme.
It is interesting for you to conclude your argument based on a myth.
